Delta AFA Flight Attendant Hotline 5/14/2007

Today is Monday, May 14th and this is an updated hotline message for all Delta Air Lines flight attendants. SLC flight attendant and AFA supporter, Paul Tanner reporting...

Building a Consensus

We are not just involved in running a campaign. We are not just getting cards signed for an election. We are also attempting to evolve and change the mindset of 13,000 flight attendants. In order to successfully secure a contract we need to understand that this isn’t an event. It is a movement. We aren’t just getting people to sign a card. We are changing the way we see ourselves.

Instead of thinking about our position in the company as a job, we are starting to see ourselves in a profession worthy of protection. We have an investment in this company that needs to be secured. We work in a volatile industry that has seen many attempts to undermine the profession of the front line employees that have bolstered the travel industry. It’s time we decide to protect our stake with a contract.

The bad times of the last few years may be passing, but will we learn that this industry is cyclical? Will we see that management is the group that moves on while we are the ones who stay? Will we move on from the point of saying “what’s in it for me?” to “what’s best for us”? I think so. The change is occurring.

AFA has been promoting the cause of the flight attendant for years to congress, the public, the FAA, and to the companies whose employees are members. It’s time we joined with our fellow flight attendants and became involved with our profession on a new level. I’m not talking about taking on a second job of actively lobbying for flight attendants. I’m asking that flight attendants become more engaged in their careers. Becoming informed, not being afraid to voice your opinion, and talking to one’s peers about critical issues are simple ways to step up our involvement. Only when we take ourselves seriously can we expect management, Congress, and the traveling public to do the same. When we achieve that, we not only will have a successful election, but we will have already built the infrastructure for successful support of a contract. It is a road we must travel to change our lives, but at least we walk it together. And we are moving down that road. Every week we receive more cards with the box checked offering to help. You can join us also.

Simply send me an email to my personal mailbox, afa4dal@mac.com and I will connect you to the person in your region in charge of recruitment. Thank you in advance for your involvement.

Seniority Continues to get Pummeled in SLC

We have recently heard that Spanish LOD flight attendants in SLC are not receiving Adays on their schedules. While I don’t doubt the importance of the LOD program, or the critical need for these speakers in SLC, I would like to point out that this is another example of the company doing what it wants in disregard to fairness and seniority.

Why aren’t LOD flight attendants system wide offered the same benefit? Why wasn’t this public before it occurred? Without a contract, policy can be changed on an unbalanced level at the whim of management. Until then maybe we can expect some demands for equity to come from our non-elected quasi-representatives at the Employee Involvement Group.

Pushing Into Summer

As the busy travel season is coming, please rest assured that your activists will still be pushing forward toward an election. Please stay informed and updated by using www.itstimedelta.net and www.deltaafa.org. It is also important to share your thoughts about the campaign in the open forum of www.itstimedelta.net. As always you can contact me with any issue. My email is afa4dal@mac.com.

This concludes the hotline message. This message will be updated next week or sooner if necessary. In the meantime, take care of each other out there on the line.
