Delta AFA Flight Attendant Hotline 5/7/2007Today is Monday, May 7th and this is an updated hotline message for all Delta Air Lines flight attendants. SAS based flight attendant and AFA supporter, Mark Stell reporting... A BIG THANK YOU!We have decided to dedicate this week's update to the faithful readers of our weekly update messages. So please accept our heartfelt THANK YOU for doing your part to stay engaged in our campaign by staying abreast of the issues! We also want to thank our readers who do not support the union drive but who also do their best to promote the flight attendant profession. The dialog we have shared with ALL of our peers makes us reassess our passion and rethink why we believe so strongly in peer elected representation. Without the feedback and candor of our flying partners this would not be a campaign. HEADS UP! A WAGE AND BENEFIT COMPARISON IS COMINGFor the last few months your Delta AFA activist flight attendants, as well as flight attendants from United and US Airways, have been working on a document comparing the wage and benefit changes we all experiences in the last 4 years. Save for Continental (who gave their share back in two earlier bankruptcies) every legacy airline exacted major concessions from their flight attendants. While it often seems like an apples to oranges when comparing the same labor groups of different airlines, our comparison does reveal some interesting facts. We believe that after you review this comparison, it will become clear that negotiating has distinct advantages over "finding a better way." We'll be very interested in hearing your reflections after you read it. The comparison will be mailed to all Delta flight attendants as part of a newsletter we have prepared. If you do not receive the newsletter, this is most likely because we do not have your correct address -- so if you would like to receive a copy, please verify your address with us by sending an email to deltaorganizing@deltaafa.org. OUR DOOR IS WIDE OPEN!During the last few weeks the Delta AFA Co-Chairs of Communications, Mark Stell and Paul Tanner, have received a handful of emails from Delta colleagues who do not currently agree with our campaign or obtaining union representation. While we absolutely appreciate hearing all points of view - it's hard not to think of the famous Shakespearean quote, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." In other words, where does all this passion to thwart representation come from? Typically, our most ardent anti-union co-workers are excellent flight attendants who are self-reliant, aggressively successful and incredible customer service providers. So why does the possibility of union membership bother them so much? Perhaps it is a fear that everything they know and trust will change? It appears that some believe a union means a "third party" is going to come onto our Delta property and wreak havoc on our hard won success. But the truth is, only Delta flight attendants will represent us and voice our collective goals. After we win the right to have legal representation our first goal will be to elect Delta flight attendants to lead our organization, to negotiate with our management on important issues such as wage and benefits that reflect our contribution to Delta's success. While everyone would like to have a fair piece of the Delta pie, the real power comes from having a voice in determining the size of the slice. What we want our anti-union colleagues to know is...no matter how vehemently you are against AFA or our desire to unionize, our DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN to you -- we will continue to invite your activism for the flight attendant profession. We do not take this campaign personally. We invite all Delta flight attendants to establish a dialog on this important issue and we will continue to greet any debate with respect and factual information. We hope we can count on the same from all our peers. As always, I also offer my personal email, mark4afa@cox.net, as a means to communicate quickly with the Delta AFA Steering Committee. A prompt response to all emails is my goal. Please continue to stay informed at www.ItsTimeDelta.net and www.deltaafa.org. Also feel free to print, share, and forward this email with your flying partners. That’s it for this week’s hotline.
