Delta AFA Flight Attendant Hotline 7/9/2007

Today is Monday, July 9th, 2007 and this is an updated hotline message for all Delta Air Lines flight attendants. SLC based flight attendant and AFA supporter, Paul Tanner reporting...

The Dog Days Are Here?

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but if you haven't noticed, summer is upon us. It is here in all of its glory. Full airplanes, full schedules, busy days off, and weather. If it's not thunderstorms in the South and Northeast it's heat and fires in the West. In all of this it seems that we aren't getting much done in organizing our flying partners towards a goal of legal representation. That is not the case. We are making great progress and it is all because we all share the work in organizing.

There has been activity in ATL at the employee parking lot and most responses are positive. We have almost 700 volunteers helping out in various ways as Phone Mobilizers, Base Mobilizers, Chair Positions, and Steering Committee members. These people are creating results. When you feel that you are too tired or busy to help organize remember that it is only a big job if you try to do it yourself. We are working together towards a common goal, that of representation and respect. We will achieve that goal, but things move faster when more people are involved. If we simply doubled the number of volunteers in our forces our efforts would also be doubled.

Our hurdles aren't so big. The biggest problem we have is making certain that every flight attendant that wants to be contacted by AFA gets this contact. We also have many cards that are out of date and the people who signed them don’t even know it. You could be one of them. By having volunteers contact these people we engage them in our campaign. With increased involvement we receive increased awareness of the issues surrounding our campaign and our industry. The volunteers we have are doing an incredible job and the results have been gratifying, but with busy summer living extra help is always welcome. We still have some open chair positions. If you are based in BOS, DCN, TPA, or MCO and would like to talk to us about a chair position, please contact me personally at afa4dal@mac.com. The chair position is not a full time job.

Volunteering is not a full time job. It is a part-time opportunity to have an impact on your current full-time profession, that of a Delta Flight Attendant. Base and Phone Mobilizers are always needed to help contact those who have cards out of date and to keep their flying partners informed. Neither of these positions takes much of your free time, and with more people helping out, we can get more things done.

Why Do We Need to Volunteer?

Pat Friend, International President of AFA, once told me; "This isn’t AFA's campaign, this campaign is yours. AFA will help, but Delta Flight Attendants hold their destiny in their own hands." This is the same approach that AFA takes toward a contract. A contract is established and voted on by the flight attendants who will be protected by it. It is supported by AFA, but ultimately belongs to the flight attendants. This campaign is ours here at Delta. We run it with our own volunteers. Who could better seek representation and respect for ourselves than us? When we stand up together as a unified work group we command the respect we deserve and can work towards a goal that serves the Delta Flight Attendant best. By involving Delta Flight Attendants at every level of this campaign we make certain that we are best served by it. This is the reason that we ask for the help of Delta Flight Attendants. Please consider this when you wonder if you have a little time to help out.

The July Heat Can’t Beat Us In ATL

Your flying partners are still braving the heat in the ATL employee parking lot. Not one has succumbed to heat exposure yet. I am proud to know them and remind them to stay hydrated. You can join them in what sounds like a fun time. Their experience is positive and they would love your support.
