DELTA FLIGHT ATTENDANTS
INTENSIFY CAMPAIGN TO JOIN
ASSOCIATION OF FLIGHT ATTENDANTS-CWA
Presidential Candidate John Edwards Lends Support to Organizing Drive
Washington , DC - Presidential Candidate John Edwards yesterday issued a letter to Delta CEO Gerald Grinstein showing his support of the Delta Air Lines flight attendants' organizing efforts to become members of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) .
In his letter, Edwards stated, "Protecting the right to organize in our democracy is important because it allows working men and women to help make decisions that affect their work lives. I hope and expect that you will protect the right of your workers to organize by remaining neutral in their on-going organizing campaign."
Late last year, a unified coalition of Delta flight attendants approached AFA-CWA to request that the union conduct an organizing drive at their carrier.
"In the face of the inevitable consolidation of our industry, we need the job and seniority protections that only a union contract can guarantee," said Andrea Taylor, New York-based Delta flight attendant. "If airline executives eventually succeed in merging our carrier, many of our flight attendants may find themselves standing in the unemployment line and stapled to the bottom of a seniority list without the many protections AFA-CWA can provide."
"We must do everything we can to protect all flight attendants," said AFA-CWA International President Patricia Friend. "Employees with a voice in their workplace and legally binding contracts are engaged in their futures and the future of the company. Currently, a growing number of flight attendants at Delta are unsure of their future and are desperately seeking the guidance and sanctuary of AFA-CWA."
A date for an election has not yet been scheduled.
For over 60 years, the Association of Flight Attendants has been serving as the voice for flight attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill. More than 55,000 flight attendants at 20 airlines come together to form AFA-CWA, the world's largest flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afanet.org. |
