What Do I Do With Authorization Cards?

Getting an authorization card signed accomplishes many tasks at once.  For one thing, it tells us there is one more flight attendant who feels we need a legally binding contract.  Also, it allows us to update our roster information for one more person.  With an accurate roster, we are able to more efficiently communicate AFA information.  In addition, if a person does not wish to sign, that is also important information.  During our card campaign, it is important we understand accurately the feelings of our colleagues.

Getting authorization cards signed is only the first step towards our goal:  Winning the vote for AFA representation.  Once we have enough cards signed, they are sent to the NMB for validation.  To ensure all cards sent in are valid, we need to ensure that:

  • Cards are signed and dated by the signer

  • The signer's employee number is entered.  For Song, they may enter their Song employee number, but it should be noted as Song on the card.

Before you mail your cards to AFA, make copies for your records.  Copies are legal replacements should cards be lost in the mail.  Also, this provides you with contact information for those who have signed, allowing you to take the next step: making sure their ballot is cast.  It is also important that you inform your base Membership Chair of cards that have been signed by others in your base.  So,

  • Get cards signed;

  • Make copies for your records;

  • Mail cards to AFA;

  • Communicate with your base Membership Chair.

Once cards are validated, the NMB will set the date for our vote, usually a 30-60 day period.  It is important that people who sign authorization cards understand that signing the card is not a vote for AFA.  Delta will try to say to confuse our colleagues as part of their interference campaign. Only casting a ballot during an election is a vote for AFA.  You will be able to contact those that you've pledged to follow up with to ensure they VOTE.
