Delta AFA Flight Attendant Hotline 7/23/2007Today is Monday, July 23rd, 2007 and this is an updated hotline message for all Delta Air Lines flight attendants. SLC based flight attendant and AFA supporter, Paul Tanner reporting... Are Delta Flight Attendants Willing Victims?? I Think Not!At a recent social event someone outside the airline industry commented that it was sad that flight attendants had fallen victim to so many bad things in the last 10 years or so. I was a little struck by her use of the word “victim”. Although we have felt many hardships, I've never thought of myself [or my peers] as victims. Here at Delta we have forged ahead against adversity. We have adapted and grown -- using the tools that have been available to us. We have suffered financially and through the increased demands of our time and increased duties on board the aircraft, we have never been victims. Although the actual definition of victim is one who has suffered at the hands of others, I consider the fact that we have never given up trying to improve our situation disqualifies the use of that word. It's time we engaged the help of each other to move forward. By joining together with a collective, legally recognized voice we can elevate our position to affect positive change. With AFA and our own contract we would help decide our future and involve ourselves on a more professional level. Taking control of our own future with a contract and a voice will enhance the respect we get, the respect we deserve, from not only management, but also the traveling public. I see no hint of a victim in that scenario; I see an opportunity for continued leadership and growth. AFA Membership by 2008 - We Can Reach that Goal with YOUR HelpLast week, several members of our Delta/AFA steering committee held a conference call to discuss the status of our campaign to join AFA. We looked at how far we have come in the past 6 months and realized that we are in a possible home stretch to an election. If we could engage the dedication of every one of our current 700 Base and Phone Mobilizers and continue to grow the ranks of our structure (we still have over 500 Flight Attendants on our HELP roster) -- we could achieve this in a matter of months. It's up to you -- will you help? We need to focus on our structure, our expired cards, our visibility, and our mobilization network now more than ever. A strong structure of active Delta flight attendants not only helps us get to an election, it also helps us have strength during an election and even more importantly, during contract negotiations. It is not enough to just sign a card – it’s necessary to help contact your flying partners to do the same. It is necessary to assure that everyone who has signed a card is current and that we have accurate personal contact information for our entire group. It is necessary to visibly show that you support Delta Flight Attendants having a voice as members of AFA. We have heard many reports over the past few weeks that our current Base Mobilizers are realizing just how much impact one person can have when they have a simple discussion about the advantage of having a contract vs. having no legal voice at all. Most importantly, we must continue to inform our peers that joining AFA is not a referendum against our company or against our executives. In fact, we encourage you to share this flyer with your fellow crew members; http://www.deltaafa.org/Docs/DeltaFlyer.pdf During the next few weeks you will be hearing more communication from AFA and your steering committee. Please consider stepping up for a few months to speed this process along. You can contact me personally at afa4dal@mac.com and I will help connect you to the campaign. We need Base Mobilizers, Base Chairs in DCA, TPM and MCO. We also need Regional (Phone Tree) Chairs in Ohio, New York, and Georgia as well as committed ATL flight attendants to offer a few hours at the ATL employee parking lot (see below). If we all join together as a team we can make this happen. After all, It's Time! ATL Flight Attendants Needed in the Employee Parking LotThe reception at the ATL employee parking lot has been great, but we need more coverage and visibility. There are currently 2 shifts that need 4 flight attendants each. They are 06:00-09:00 AM and 15:00-18:30 PM. Please come hang out with Al Corry and Kay Thomas in the parking lot. They could use YOUR help.
That’s it for this week’s hotline. Please stay safe and support each other. Staying informed about the campaign is easy and please share your findings with others.
